MY TEXTILE LIFE

I live and breathe fibres, yarns, and textiles. I started sewing as a child, took up knitting as a teenager and soon wanted to create yarn for myself. Learning to spin really changed the direction of my life and I started to teach spinning about 40 years ago. Spinning soon led to a continuing exploration of natural dyes and I love experimenting and trying out new potential dyestuffs, as well as using the tried and tested traditional dyes.

In 2018 and 2019 I was Artist-in-Residence at the Icelandic Textile Centre in Blonduos, North West Iceland. Look on the Projects page to see some of the work I did there, and my inspiration. You can also see more of my work on the Exhibitions and Galleries pages.

Spinning and knitting remain constants, but I enjoy learning and sharing other textile skills. Pattern-making on fabric or paper with ecoprinting and shibori have kept me busy lately. I sell a range of upcycled and hand made items via my 'alter ego' Maisie's Emporium

Teaching textile skills gives me the opportunity to travel and meet many wonderful and interesting people. I give one-to-one tuition and run workshops around Scotland and at international fibre festivals,  I know that friendships as well as yarns, colours and knits are made in my workshops. To find out more, look on the Workshops page.
